This quarter, Catholic Charities is highlighting Pathways to Stability and Healing—the many ways our programs walk alongside individuals as they overcome barriers, regain stability, and move forward with dignity and hope. At The Beacon, that pathway looks different for every guest. For Trevor, it meant having a place to return when circumstances beyond his control left him without a home once again.
At 60 years old, Trevor found himself walking back through the doors of The Beacon.
Two years earlier, he had come to The Beacon seeking support. With determination and hard work, Trevor secured a job as a taxi driver, found stable housing, and began rebuilding his life.
Then circumstances changed. A change in property ownership affected his ability to renew his lease, and Trevor once again found himself without a home. A decades-old conviction—despite having completed his sentence and having no further involvement with law enforcement for more than 20 years—created another barrier in an already difficult housing search.
This time, Trevor was also facing growing health concerns. Type 2 diabetes and worsening mobility issues made finding the right housing even more important. He needed more than a roof over his head; he needed a living environment that would allow him to safely maintain his independence and quality of life.
Finding the Right Path Forward
When Trevor returned to The Beacon, staff began helping him navigate the systems and resources available to him. They assisted him in connecting with Medicaid and enrolling in long-term care services while working alongside community partners, including the Aging and Disability Resource Center, a local Managed Care Organization care team, and Porchlight case management.
Together, this network helped Trevor address both his housing and healthcare needs.
Once enrolled with a Managed Care Organization, Trevor’s care team helped coordinate support for his diabetes and mobility challenges while exploring housing options that could provide the assistance he needed without sacrificing his independence.
And Trevor remained at the center of every decision.
As he toured several Adult Family Homes, he advocated for himself—asking questions, voicing concerns, and carefully considering accessibility, location, and whether each home truly felt like the right fit.
Then, in the summer of 2026, Trevor received the news he had been working toward: he was approved for placement in a permanent Adult Family Home.
For Trevor, stability didn’t come from a single service or organization. It came through persistence, partnership, advocacy, and people willing to walk alongside him when the path forward became difficult.
Today, Trevor has more than a place to call home. He has access to the healthcare and support he needs to remain as independent as possible—and the opportunity to move forward with greater stability, dignity, and hope.
That is what a pathway to stability can look like: meeting someone where they are, walking alongside them through the barriers, and helping create a path toward what comes next.
