Common Question on the HUD – VASH Program

Housing Tips

What is it?

The HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) program combines HUD’s Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) rental assistance for homeless Veterans with case management and clinical services provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

What are the Requirements?

Unlike many of the Housing Choice Voucher programs, VASH vouchers can not be applied for directly, but must be referred by the VA.

In order to be eligible, you must be:

  • A veteran who is experiencing homelessness
  • Receiving active case management.
  • Depending on the County, there maybe an income restriction
  • The veteran nor anyone in his household can be a life time sex offender registrant.

County Specifics

Requirements such as possible income restrictions, portability, and inspection prior to renting the unit are regionally specific, and as of now, Dane county does not in so far as I can tell publish this information.
