The Elder Mentor program, established in 1990, provides friendship and support to older individuals living in Dane County.
Volunteers in this program meet needs that other senior service providers are not able to address. Catholic Charities staff matches the client with a volunteer who is committed to helping elders. An Elder Mentor volunteer is trained to encourage the client’s decision-making and self-reliance. The “Mentor” provides advice, information, assistance and friendship.
Eligibility
Individuals age 55 and over who need appropriate services are eligible. Because Elder Mentor is funded in part by United Way of Dane County, clients must reside in Dane County. Many clients in this program have been referred by local social workers; however, the individual or someone acting on their behalf may contact the Elder Mentor program coordinator to inquire how to receive services.
Volunteers
Individuals, couples, families and groups who have an appreciation of and a desire to support an elder are drawn to this program. All volunteers are required to undergo a criminal background check and must provide three objective references. Volunteers are offered training in specific areas of safety, communication and observation. Mentor volunteers schedule visits with their elder based on their own availability and the need of the elder. Visits can be once a week or once a month. All volunteers receive ongoing support and supervision from the program coordinator.
Elder Mentor services are as diverse as the skills and interests of the volunteer mentors. This is a list of some areas of assistance Mentors provide: Companionship, by phone or home visit, checkbook balancing, help with bills, letter writing, computer information and assistance, help with organizing – from budget to closets, reading, library pick-up, errands, and limited transportation – at the discretion of the program coordinator.
